AWIPS OB9 Blended TPW Products

Description:

This session covers the Blended TPW (total precipitable water), and Percent of Normal TPW products newly available in AWIPS OB9. Data sources used for these blended TPW products will be identified. Also, the presentation of these products in AWIPS will be illustrated, as well as the current AWIPS display limitations. Finally, basic operational uses of blended TPW products will be identified.

Objectives:

  • Identify data sources used for Blended TPW products
  • Understand presentation of products in AWIPS
  • Become aware of current AWIPS display limitations
  • Recognize basic operational uses of blended TPW products




ASCAT Winds

Description:

This session is a follow-up to the QuikSCAT Winds training session, and covers the characteristics of the Advanced Scatterometer, or ASCAT, instrument aboard EUMETSAT’S MetOp-A satellite. ASCAT data became newly available in AWIPS with the release of OB9. The coverage and biases of the ocean vector winds retrieved by ASCAT will be assessed. Also, comparisons between ASCAT data and QuikSCAT data will be made. Finally, a warning decision will be presented to illustrate effective utilization of scatterometer data for marine operations.

Objectives:

  • Understand how ASCAT works
  • Assess strengths and weaknesses of ASCAT wind retrievals
  • Identify contrasts between ASCAT and QuikSCAT data
  • Understand how to best use ASCAT data operationally



Call-to-Action Marker Training

Description:

This training will teach forecasters all of the pertinent information about the new CTA Markers, including what they are, why they are being introduced, and how to ensure the needed products contain them.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the CTA markers
  • Describe the purpose of the CTA markers
  • Create correctly-formatted products via both GFE and WarnGen
  • Identify when a CTA marker is required
  • Understand how to correctly configure call-to-action text for local hazards
